94-Year-Old Ferrian Dies
Miss Mary Elizabeth Ashton, One of Oldest Belmont County Residents, Dies
Miss Mary Elizabeth Ashton, 94, one of the oldest residents of Belmont county, passed away in the home of Mrs Mary B Ashton, at Steeple Valley, west of Martins Ferry, yesterday morning at 7:30 o'clock. Death was attributed to advanced age. She had been blind and an invalid for the past five years, but not until two weeks ago did her condition become serious.
The body was taken to the Howard Wilson mortuary home in Bridgeport and this morning will be returned to the Ashton residence where funeral services will be conducted this afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev S A Stephan, pastor of the First Methodist church, will officiate. Interment will take place in Weeks cemetery.
Miss Ashton was born near Colerain, January 18, 1837, a daughter of Mr and Mrs Isaac Ashton, pioneer residents of the county. By a coincidence she lived her entire life within a radius of five miles of the place of birth. She was the last of a family of 10 children, a brother, James Ashton, dying in the same house in 1926.
She leaves seven nephews and six nieces, Guy Ashton, of Cadiz, Isaac, Harry and Clyde Ashton, of Short Creek, W Va, Roy Ashton, of California, Clarence Reese, of Steubenville, Edward Blackford, of Loveland, Colo, Mrs William DeVault of Pleasant Ridge; Mrs B Lukens, of Kansas; Mrs B Carnahan, Mrs John Singerwalt and Mrs John Kiger, of Wheeling, and Mrs Charles Helsley, of Martins Ferry. She was a member of the Lancaster M E chapel.
