Chicago Sun-Times July 1, 2001:

Rev. Joseph Small, Loyola administrator

A political science professor who frequently contributed to the op-ed pages of the Chicago Sun-Times and Chicago Tribune, the Rev. Joseph F. Small was also a pioneering missionary.

He was an academician and administrator at Loyola University Chicago for 40 years and a Jesuit priest for more than 65 years.

Father Small, 83, died Wednesday at Colombiere Jesuit Community in Clarkston, Mich., his home since he suffered a stroke in 1997.

Former Loyola administrator Lorraine Serwatka described him as "a man with a formidable facade but a very gentle heart . . . a man with strong convictions and intense loyalty to his friends and to the university."

Father Small attended St. Sabina School and both St. Leo and St. Ignatius high schools before entering the Jesuit novitiate in Milford, Ohio, in 1935.

As part of his training, he taught from 1943 to 1945 at the Colegio Centro America in Granada, Nicaragua.

"Long before the Jesuits began to focus their attention on Central and South America, Father Small was doing his pastoral work there," said the Rev. Earl Weis, a Loyola theology professor.

Father Small returned to the school to find it and his former students doing well.

He was awarded a master's degree in philosophy from Loyola in 1946, two years before being ordained, and received a doctorate in political science from Fordham University in 1955.

Joining Loyola's faculty in 1954, Father Small taught political science until 1985, chairing the department from 1963 to 1969.

Father Small served as a Loyola trustee from 1965 to 1972 and as rector of the Loyola Jesuit community from 1969 to 1971.

His published works include a translation from the Spanish of Ortega y Gassett, Existentialist by Jesuit priest Jose Sanchez Villasenor in 1949.

Survivors include a sister, Sister Marie Cornelia, a Dominican nun.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. Monday until a 7:30 p.m. mass at Madonna della Strada Chapel of Loyola University, 6525 N. Sheridan. Burial will be in All Saints Cemetery in Des Plaines.
