Erle was the husband of Ruth Boyce. Erle and Ruth married October 10, 1942 at North Lake Methodist Church. They had one child, a daughter, Lynne Marie Stewart.
Erle served with distinction in the United States Army in World War II, spending much of his service time in the China-Burma-India theatre of operation. He was assigned to Army Intelligence and was decorated with the Bronze Star for "Meritorious service." In the commendation it was stated that under fire he "never made on erroneous judgement." When the war ended he returned to Michigan where his beloved wife and child awaited him. Their's was and remained a model marriage. He finished his formal educationin Ann Arbor where the Stewarts continued to live.
Erle was with Ford Motor Company for 25 years, retiring in 1977. In retirement he and Ruth had much opportunity for extensive travel. He and Ruth enjoyed world travel with the NOMADS. Church was an important parted of their shared life. They participated in the founding of two new congregations: St. Matthew's UMC in Ypsilanti and Glacier Way UMC in Ann Arbor. As members of First Presbyterian Church of Dearborn, they were Presidents of the Mariners. He also sang in and organized the Madrigal Dinners.
Erle and Ruths hospitality opened their home and cottage to parents, brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews, exchange students and missionaries, offering kindness and support as well as food and lodging.
Uncle Erle was a luminous and beloved person. He always had a smile and a bear hug of a greeting. He lived life with a twinkle and has atttained the victory of his faith.
