Walter Thomas Bates is the son of John Thomas "Tom" Bates and hs first wife, Midge Evy Rose (Johnson) Bates.

He was the husband of Beatrice Awtrey Bates.

Walter T. Bates, 44, Steele Route 1, died at 12:10 a.m. today in Blount Memorial Hospital in Oneonta after a long illness.

Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Shiloh Baptist Church with the Rev. George E. Armstrong officiating.

Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery. Collier-Butler Funeral Home directing.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Beatrice Awtrey Bates, five sons, Reese, Douglass, John, Wesley, and Charles Richard Bates: three daughters, Mrs. Douglass Cunningham, Mrs. Herbert Battles and Miss Joyce Bates, all of Steele Route 1: two brothers, Clyde Bates, Steele Route 1, Pierce Bates, Gadsden; one sister, Mrs. Charlie Heizman, Detroit, Mich., and two grandchildren.

Mr. Bates was a native of Etowah County and a resident of Etowah and St. Clair counties all his life. He attended the Church of the Nazarene in Steele, and had been a textile worker at Dwight Mills for 20 years.

The body will remain at the residence from 10 a.m. tomorrow until the hour of services.

Mr. Bates was a longtime resident of Alabama. He had served four years with the U.S. Air Force and several years with the U.S. National Guard. He was of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by his father, Walter Thomas Bates; brother, Douglas Bates; and his sister, Martha Ann Bates.

He is survived by his sons William Thomas (Angela) Bates, Steele, and John Wesley (Riley) Bates, Fort Hood, Texas; granddaughter, Hailey Jade Bates, Fort Hood; mother, Beatrice Bates, Steele; brothers, Herbert R. Bates, Birmingham, and John H. and Charles R. Bates, both of Steele; sisters, Sylvia Cunningham, Steele, and Joyce Bates, San Leandro, Calif.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Pallbearers will be Chris Henderson, Jeffery Lowe, Steve Pierce, Robin Pierce, Ian Bates and Kenneth Seals.

Charles Richard Bates, 58, Steele, passed away on Wednesday, March 13, 2014. Graveside services will be held 2:30 p.m. today at Shiloh United Baptist Cemetery. The Rev. Glenn Pender will officiate. Collier-Butler Funeral and Cremation Services directing.

Charles "Rick" was an avid Harley Davidson rider and fan. He also enjoyed building Harleys from the ground up. He was very outgoing, giving and never met a stranger. His friends stretched from Alabama to California, and they all will miss him greatly.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Beatrice Bates; sisters, Joyce and Ann Bates, brothers, Douglas and Wesley Bates, and nephew, Ian Bates.

He is survived by his son, Lee Pierce; Sylvia Cunningham of Steele; brothers, Reese Bates of Birmingham and John Bates (Sharon) of Steele; nieces, Terry Tafoya of California, Karen Seals of Steele, Patti Cunningham of Steele and Charles Bates of Birmingham, nephews, Jason Bates of Steele, Joel, Thomas and Chris Bates, all of California, Daren Tafoya of California, Johnny Bates of Southside, and William Bates of Rainsville; and a host of cousins and friends.
