INVENTED SULPHURETS SAVER.
Jean Henri Baudouin, Deceased, Was a Pioneer of the Fifties.
By the death of Jean Henri Baudouin at Boston Ravine, recorded in the Union yesterday, a familiar figure of the old mining days of the early fifties is removed. The deceased engaged in placer mining here until 1866, when he went to Amador County to work in the Kentucky mine. He was crippled by an accident in that mine and rendered incapable of doing hard work, which was the original cause of the succession of paralytic strokes that caused his death.
He returned to Grass Valley and being a man of great inventive genius he figured out a device for saving sulphurets from mining tailings. It is a mechanical device and is attached to a rocker. The old-time surface miners, and especially the Frenchmen of Grass Valley, have made much use of the apparatus and with it they have had great success. Many have secured their livings and others have made good money with it for a quarter of a century. The sulphurets, when secured are sent to chlorination works for reduction.
Mr. Baudouin employed his inventive gift in the creation of many other useful devices. He was highly educated in the French language. He led a very secluded life with his family, consisting of a wife and three children. He was of a very retiring disposition. The deceased was for years a member of the local lodge of United Workmen, carrying $2000 life insurance in the order.
