Phillip George "Phil" Abbott

Phillip Abbott, 79, passed on Sunday, Nov. 11, 2012, at his home in Brookings.
He was born in Baltimore, Md., but raised in Sedro-Woolley, Wash., where he excelled in track during his high school years. After graduating from high school, Phil left and joined a travelling circus for several years.
Pennsylvania became home for a while.
He moved back to the West Coast and settled in Escondido, Calif., in the 1970s, where he met and married Olivia Ravago. They moved to Brookings in the early 1990s, where they were active in the community and he owned Phil's Auto Recycling.
He and Olivia helped start Nature's Coastal Holiday Light Show in Azalea Park in 1997, and Olivia started the botanical garden.
Phil was known throughout the Brookings community for walking through town and hanging at McDonald's and Freddy's, seeing what kind of trouble he could stir up.
His family wishes to thank the Brookings community and the employees of Sea View Senior Living (Angie, Jan, Sandy, Debbie) for looking out for such a stubborn old goat. So many of you gave him rides when it got tough for him to walk up the hill or when it was raining. Brookings is like no other and we are forever thankful to you all. We are even thankful to the person who slipped him $10 at Fred Meyer when he was sitting on the bench, mistaking him for an old homeless guy.
An annual donation of $500 will be given to the Nature's Coastal Holiday Light Show in memory of Phil and Olivia Abbott, so that the town can continue to enjoy this tradition that our parents so loved and worked so hard for to succeed.
Phil is preceded in death by Olivia Abbott (January 2008).
He has five surviving stepdaughters: Monette Bell of Escondido, Tina Prince of St. George, Utah, Jeri Eskey of Escondido, Rose Anna Eskey of Escondido and Katherine Wilson of Melbourne, Australia. He had numerous grandchildren and great- grandchildren.
There will be a gathering on Sunday, Nov. 18., starting at 8 a.m. at the Brookings McDonald's, to farewell this Brookings character.
