When she was 39, in 1910, they lived on a home farm in Slate, St Clair County AL, they had remained married 16 years and she had 4 more children, only 3 survived, all daughters.
At 49 years old she had delivered one more child, a son, Curtis, but had also become a widow. Her husband died in 1914. At the time of the census she and the five youngest children lived on 6th Street in Alabama City, AL. She was unemployed, but Authur worked in the steel mill and Henry worked at the cotton mill. Everyone else went to school. Viola was apparently married and out of home by then.
In 1929 her daughter, Maggie, died and left three young children. The oldest, Margaret, comes to live with her "Grandma Mitchel". In 1930 the only one of Joeannah's children still at home is John Curtis. They are living not far from the Sixth St home at 500 Schuler St. John Curtis is 17 and working as a truck driver at the coal yard.
According to her granddaughter, Margaret, Grandma Mitchel was the best grandmother ever. She was a much loved grandma. She died at home of an apparent heart-attack in the midst of a horrible thunderstorm and in the presence of her young granddaughter.
