Sam was born into a Quaker (American Friends) family with roots in the early histories of Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. In his early 20s he went west and ended up opening a coffe shop in Camargo, Douglas County, Illinois. There he became attracted to Maud Roberts, eldest daughter of one of his steady customers, Henry Clay Roberts. Even though Maud was only 15 and "still wearing short dresses," the two fell in love and decided to elope when Maud's father refused his permission.
They were married in Indiana on June 29, 1876, soon after Maud's 16th birthday. Shortly afterward they moved to a farm in North Murderkill Hundred (Camden), Kent County, Delaware, where they lived the rest of their lives. Their son Walter was born in 1877 and their daughter Florence in 1879. Sam died in 1916 of liver cancer.
