Harold Granville "Fens" Fenstermacher

HAROLD FENSTERMACHER: Harold Granville "Fens" Fenstermacher, 97, died peacefully Feb. 11, 2011 in Elm Terrace Gardens, Lansdale.

He was the husband of the late Dorothy Moore Fenstermacher, who died in 2007.

Born in Rich Hill, he was the son of the late Harry J. and Elsie G. Fenstermacher.

He received his doctorate in Surgical Chiropody from Temple University in 1938.

Drafted into the Army in 1940, he served with the "Tin Cat Battalion" in combat in Italy. Wounded twice, and awarded two Purple Hearts, he returned to the states after his second head wound.

He immediately enrolled in Lehigh University's mechanical engineering program. Subsequently, he designed and calibrated instruments for the U.S. Navy, plus several large testing machine manufacturers, until his retirement in 1978.

Mr. Fenstermacher's memberships included the Military Officers' Assoc. of America, the Military Order of the Purple Heart, Combat Infantryman's Assoc., Mensa, the Eastern PA Sports Car Club, the Germantown-Mt. Airy Camera Club, Songwriters of North America and the Goshenhoppen Historians. He will be remembered for his many talents and stories.

He is survived by his extended family and friends.

In addition to his wife, he was also preceded in death by a brother, Robert W. Fenstermacher.

Services will be at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Montgomery County S.P.C.A., P.O. Box 222, Conshohocken, PA 19428. Arrangements are with Huff & Lakjer Funeral Home, Lansdale.
