Leigh was the son of Augustus W. Wolfe (1861-1942) and Minnie O. Alcott Wolfe (1863-after 1930). Leigh had a sister, Doris A. Wolfe (1895-1984).

In his single young adulthood, Leigh worked as a rancher in San Jose, California. As a married man he worked in various capacities in corporations.

He was married twice. On Jan. 15, 1919, he married Hester Lucretia Cotton from Escanaba, Michigan. They had three children: Dexter Leigh Wolfe (1920-1998), William A. Wolfe (1921-2013) and Hester Ann Wolfe (b. 1929). Hester, Leigh’s wife, died on Christmas Eve, 1929. She had been born on Christmas Day of 1892.

On June 25, 1934, Leigh married Ruth Mary Saecker, a school teacher, from Appleton, Wisconsin.
