By Robert Hoiles Beacon Journal staff writer
David E. Fuller was a 23-year Akron police veteran who had been cited for bravery and investigative skills that resulted in the arrests of burglars and robbers. Fuller, 46, died Monday of brain cancer. For most of his career, he worked as a patrol officer. In his most recent assignment before he retired May 26, Fuller worked as a detective in the vice unit. 'I knew him since he joined the police department,' said Lt. Tom Fox, commander of the vice unit. 'He was an outstanding police officer. I know I can speak for everybody in the vice squad on this we're going to miss him.' Fuller served three years in the Marines after graduating from Garfield High School in 1965. He became a police officer in Akron police veteran 1970. Fuller's police file shows that he received a commendation in 1981 for an investigation that solved several burglaries. He also received a departmental commendation in 1979 for catching an armed robber. In 1976 he received a commendation from the department and the FBI for arresting a bank robber. Patrolman Ron Helfrich, who worked with Fuller in a patrol car in the 1970s, called him a dependable and brave partner. 'David was the kind of police officer you could count on no matter what,' Helfrich said. 'He would always be there for you.' Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann; a daughter... sons... all of Green; and his mother, Nell Fuller. Calling hours will be from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the Hummel Funeral Home.
