Lee was in the U.S. Army and served in Korea. Survived by his wife Betty Starns, his children: Susan Hemmings, Teresa Duffee and Robbie Smith. He was the son of the late Emmitt L. and Mary Jim Canady Smith. Lee's mother died from complications of childbirth and he was raised by his grandmother, Eula Mae Carter Smith. He also was preceded in death by a son, Jeffery Smith, and sister, Mary Faye Smith.
