William Mifflin Smith was the son of William Taylor Smith (1804-1837) and Mary Grant (1809-1896). He was still living in Philadelphia in 1850 (1850 US Census). William left Pennsylvania bound for California in 1855, by way of Panama. He enlisted as a private at Napa, Napa County, November 25, 1861, and was mustered into Company I, 5th California Infantry, November 26. He was promoted to sergeant major March 8, 1863, and transferred to Field & Staff, 5th California Infantry. Sergeant Major Smith was discharged to accept a commission to 2nd Lieutenant August 10, 1863, and mustered into Company E, 5th California Infantry. Lieutenant Smith was detailed to Company H, 1st New Mexico Infantry, to help organize the company January 1, 1864. He returned to Company E, 5th California Infantry, August 4, 1864. When Company E, 5th California Infantry, was mustered out November 30, 1864, Lieutenant Smith re-enlisted and was transferred to Company F, 1st Battalion, California Veteran Volunteers. Lieutenant Smith was mustered out at Franklin (El Paso), Texas, April 8, 1865 (Orton, 409, 676, 694, 715). After the war William eventually returned to Pennsylvania where he married Mary Lash at Markelsville in Perry County June 26, 1883. William was still living at Marklesville when he filed for a Civil War veteran's pension April 13, 1891, and received application No. 1,017,839 and certificate No. 707,469. William took his family to San Diego, California, in 1894, where he refiled for his veteran's pension March 16, 1907, and where he appears as a resident in the 1910 US Census. William died at San Diego and was buried in the Elk's Plot in Greenwood Memorial Park. After William's death, Mary filed for a Civil War widow's pension at San Diego December 28, 1914, and received application No. 1,038,975 (a certificate number does not appear for this application).
