John Walter Smith was about 5 years old when he left Markelsville, Pennsylvania, with his parents and moved with them to California, where he remained the rest of his life. He was married at least twice: [1] Veryl Viola Laing (9 Dec. 1896, San Francisco - 6 Sep. 1990, Ojai) at San Francisco in 1915, they were divorced by 1930; and [2] Anna D. [..?..](1899, NY-after 1966) in 193? (1920, 1930, 1940 US Census). He was a long time employee of the San Diego Gas & Electric Company.

Services for John Walter Smith, 71, of 4325 10th Ave., a member of an early San Diego family who died Monday in a hospital, will be at 11:30 a.m. tomorrow in Johnson-Saum & Knobel Mortuary.
Smith, a native of Pennsylvania, lived here 67 years. His father was the late Capt. William Mifflin Smith, scion of a wealthy Philadelphia shipping family, Civil War officer, one-time Pony Express rider and a leader in the Elks Lodge here. He died in 1914.
J. W. Smith was reared in a 78-year-old landmark home still standing on the northwest corner of First Avenue and Laurel Street. He attended old Middleton School and San Diego High School. He retired in 1957 as a shop mechanic at San Diego Gas & Electric Co., where he began work in 1927.
Smith was a member of the company credit union committee at the time of his death. Surviving are his widow, Anna; a son, and four grandchildren. Cremation is planned.
