Mary Elizabeth (Emfield) Barger was the daughter and only child born to John C. Emfield and Eleanor (Ferrell) Emfield. She was born in Harrison County, Ohio, where her grandparents John and Elizabeth (Tipton) Emfield were some of the early pioneers in that region, having moved from Pennsylvania to Ohio around 1817. Even today, there are many descendants living in the area.

Mary married William Cobb Barger on 16 Aug 1870 in Harrison County, Ohio. They had eight children born to this union:
