He was born Feb. 26, 1946, in Philadelphia to Joseph and Catherine Hines McFadden. He married Paula Davis on July 4, 1978, in Klamath Falls.
He received his associate degree from Lane Community College in airframe mechanics and aircraft maintenance. He served in the U.S. Air Force in Vietnam and received a Purple Heart. Mac was a well- known figure in Oregon Democratic Politics over several decades. He served on the committee that chose the final site of the former Skinner Butte Cross and in 1996, he served as a Presidential Elector. He was an Oregon Delegate to the DNC in 1992, was active in state and local committees, and ran as a candidate for elective office several times. Known for his long-standing advocacy on behalf of the homeless, McFadden was coordinator for the joint city of Eugene/St. Vincent de Paul homeless initiative, until budget cuts ended it. He was also a homeless advocate and folk musician, appearing with his guitar in Vietnam, on both coasts and points in-between.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Brenda "Alex" Schmidt of Eugene; a brother, Thomas of Philadelphia; a sister, Susan Smart of Philadelphia; and one grandchild. A daughter, Leslie Siobhan McFadden, died previously.
