Born in Huntington, W. Va., he was a U.S. Navy veteran, and retired from the Akron Police Department after 28 years of service. Mr. Akers was a member of the Akron Baptist Temple, where he taught Sunday School for 30 years.
Preceded in death by his father, Donald Akers, he is survived by his wife of 33 years, Linda; daughter, Michele (Tony) Urdiales; son, Matthew Akers and his fiancee, Trisha Williams; mother, Juanita Akers; mother-in-law, Claris Sloan; and many loving relatives and friends.
Funeral services Thursday, 11 a.m., at the Akron Baptist Temple, 2324 Manchester Rd., with Dr. Charles F. Billington officiating. Interment at Greenlawn Memorial Park, where Firestone V.F.W. Post 3383 will conduct military services. Friends may call at the Eckard-Baldwin Funeral Home & Chapel, 760 E. Market St., Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. The family requests memorial donations to the Akron Baptist Temple.
