"It is with sadness that we report the death of D. Atkinson, which occurred at his son John Atkinson's on the night of December 16, at 1- o'clock. He was born in Virginia March 22, 1804. Grandpa Atkinson was 87 years, 8 months and 25 days old. He was a consecrated man and went home to live with the angels. May his sons and daughters serve the God he served and make his home their home. Rev. W.J. Sims conducted the burial sermon Sunday evening and preached us a good sermon Sunday night.
B. Atkinson and wife have been out waiting on their sick father."
As he was living in the Hope area with William Patton Atkinson when he died, it is most likely he is buried in Scarborough Branch Cemetery. William Patton's son, William Conly, is buried there and his stone is one of four remaining. Records show that there were 30-35 tombstones originally.
----
Originally from Virginia, probably came to Victoria as early as 1874, lived on. Spring creak—present site of Mr. Thomas Sterns residence, removed to Lavaca county in 1857. His sons, all worthy citizens are William, John H, and Baker. Miss Florilla, eldest daughter, married Mr. Wm. McAlmond, about the year 1859; Miss Palmyra married Capt. James Borden, C. S. A. in 1861; and Miss Fannit:, youngest daughter, married Mr. Pearson, of Lavaca.
