PIKEVILLE - Oland Franklin Peele, 79, of 189 Nahunta Road, died Saturday at Sunbridge Care and Rehab Center in Mount Olive. A native of Wayne County, he was the son of the late George Frank and Effie Overman Peele. A farmer and livestock producer, he was founder and owner of Nahunta Farm Sausage. He was manager of the Wayne County Fair for 37 years. He was a member of the Nahunta Friends Meeting, where he served as trustee Superintendent of the Sunday School for 13 years, member of the finance committee and the building committee. He was a graduate of Nahunta High School and attended North Carolina State University. Mr. Peele received the Distinguish Service Award for the Chester White Breeders Association, was awarded the J.C. Young Man of the Year in 1953 and was the first farmer to receive this award. He was inducted into the North Carolina State Fair Livestock Hall of Fame, Wayne County Agricultural Hall of Fame. He was the former President of North Carolina State Swine Breeders Association, a charter member of Nahunta Grange, member and former president for 37 years of the Wayne County Livestock Development Association, member of the North Carolina 4-H Honor Club, former member of the Wayne County Memorial Hospital Board of Directors. He was the first president of the North Carolina 4-H leaders and was the former president of the North Carolina Farmer's Convention.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Jean Dudley Peele; sons, Anthony Peele and wife, Beth Caughron Peele of Pikeville and Gregory Peele; grandchildren, Brad Peele and Tara Peele; and sister, Ora Belle Peele Sasser of Pikeville. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, H. Aaron Peele.

Funeral service will be held Monday at 2:00 p.m. from Nahunta Friends Meeting with Steve Lawrence officiating. Burial will follow in the Nahunta Cemetery. Flowers are welcomed or memorials may be made to the 4-H Endowment Fund, 208 West Chestnut Street, Goldsboro, NC 27530. The family will receive friends Sunday at Seymour Funeral Home from 6-8 p.m. and other times at the residence.
