James was born in the city of Mineral Point, and raised on their farm in Mineral Point Township, in the area that came to be known as Oak Park, just a few miles south-west of Mineral Point, and west of the Old Galena Road, now known as State Highway 151. On Tuesday morning, October 25, 1887, at St. Paul's Catholic church, Mineral Point, Wisconsin, James married Miss Mary C. Dunbar, a daughter of John and Ellen (Grant) Dunbar. John and Ellen were early pioneer residents of Mineral Point. James and Mary took up housekeeping in the house that had lately been occupied by Squire Commins, located at the intersection of Fountain and Chestnut streets.

According to this issue: 1892, Oct 21, Fri. Pg. 1: Often known as J.J. Collins, sold his interest in the saloon business to James McKinley. He was indecisive as to what business he would engage in at that time yet.

22 Oct 1896, Thu ·Page 1 Iowa County Democrat: James J. Collins started last Tuesday (Tue. 13 Oct 1896) for Denver, Colorado. Should business prospects there suit him, he may move to that state, though many friens hope he will decide to remain in Mineral Point.

Just as the family was preparing to leave for Denver Colorado, in late August/early September, their plans were postponed due to their youngest becoming ill for three weeks that resulted in the death of their youngest daughter, Florence Hazel. (See her FAG). In Denver, he and his wife ran a grocery store at 2900 West 26th Avenue and residing in a house nearby at 2622 Elliott Street, both within the City of Denver.
Sadly, while his wife was in Mineral Point visiting her mother and sisters, he quickly became ill and died from spinal meningitis, that was thought he caught from a patron of his store. Mrs. Collins arrived home just prior to his passing. She tried to continue to run the grocery as long as she could but soon there after had to let it go. When the Interstate came thru, that house and the grocery were bought out and their nearby Catholic Cemetery graves were moved.
