Bertha M Frederick Ponto, 43 died while attempting to save her two drowning sons, Ralph and Edgar. The accident occurred when the youngest Ponto boy, Ralph broke through some shell ice that had formed over a water filled hole in the Ponto farm field, while coasting on his sled. Although this hole is normally dry, it was filled yesterday to a depth of about eight feet with melted snow water.
Observing the plight of his borther, the second son, Edger, went to his assistance but also sank beyond his depth.
His cries attracked his mother, who ran from her home to the pond and plunged into the icy water in a brave arrempt to save her children.
The father, who had been working in the farm barn, arrived in time to see his wife sink from sight. He also went into the pond and he was overcome when neigbors arrived to help.
They succeeded in reviving the father and locating the bodies of the mother and the two children.
The latter were dead when a physician arrived, but the father was resuscitated. He is suffering from exposure.
Aid for the family was summoned by Mrs. Otto Ruck who lives in the adjopining farm house. She heard the cries for help and realized she could do little alone, phoned all nearby neighbors.
The accident occurred between 6 and 6:30 o'clock.
