From the Corpus Christi (TX) Caller-Times, June 15, 2005:

Rhoda Margaret Sevier --
Today the last child of Guy and Mary Elizabeth Patton Sevier died in Corpus Christi, Texas. She had been a loving, devoted care giver to her father, Guy, and sister, Jessee, for several years while working as an executive secretary with Delhi-Taylor and later as a secretary to the superintendent of schools at Corpus Christi Independent Schools.

She was affectionately known as "Sitter" by her sisters, brothers and nieces and nephews. The nickname probably was given at an early age when a brother or sister could not say Sister...but then all the Sevier family had nicknames and discovery of given names was only when looking up family records. She comes from a long line of historically memorable people and often visited with the Seviers and recounted that her mother was the great-granddaughter of Elizabeth Patton Crockett, the second wife to the famed Davy Crockett. Also told was the linkage to the first governor of Tennessee, John Sevier.

When Sitter was young she spent her days in the cotton fields, cooking, washing and helping tend to the large family of nine children, where she used to dream of one day going to the city and leaving all the hard work behind but always wanted to stay close to family. She later would talk with delight about the love for Corpus with its water and many choices for work that differed from the rural life she had known as a child. She especially relished the wonderful choices of seafood fare that Corpus had to offer. She remained there and chose to work, live, and die there.

As an aunt to sixteen nieces and nephews, Sitter was always fun-loving and loved to laugh, play games, sight see, fish, eat, and generally entertain those sixteen nieces and nephews, even taking in a nephew for the summer sharing her car, home, food and good times. Her generous nature was always evident in the way she treated friends and family.

Margaret's organizational skills were put to work at the jobs that she was employed at. She liked the work as a secretary and enjoyed working for Delhi-Taylor as an executive secretary and later at Corpus Christi Independent Schools for Superintendent Dana Williams. She spoke fondly of the time she spent in the superintendent's office as secretary.

Margaret was the last child of Guy and Mary Sevier and had been preceded in death by her parents and eight brothers and sisters.
Survivors are a sister-in-law, Mrs. Robert Sevier of Waxahachie, Texas and long-time friend, Rita Mangiapane of Corpus Christi, Texas. Also surviving are nieces and nephews, Betty Sevier, Sarah Allard, Jane Wilkinson, Jerry Sevier, Bonnie Commuzie, Norma Zunker, Ruby Wharton, Alice Hobbs, Louise Olson, Charles Cooper, and 25 great-nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 15, 2005 at Seaside Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 16, 2005 at Seaside Funeral Home Chapel. Entombment to follow at Seaside Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association of South Texas, 2910 Leopard St., Corpus Christi, Texas 78408.
