Magilda Queirolo Aroz was born September 16, 1915, in Columbia to Italian immigrants, Lugi and Angela Queirolo. She spent her entire life living in Tuolumne County, having married Martin Joseph Aroz after completing her schooling, and devoted herself to her husband and their two children.
Magilda passed away on Saturday, April 5, 2003, at her daughter's home in San Jose. She was 87.
Together with her husband, Magilda owned and operated a gas station, Aroz Florist Shop, Sonora Electric Service and Aroz Catering Service.
She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Tuolumne County Senior Citizens and Native Daughters of the Golden West, Columbia parlor.
Mrs. Aroz was survived by a daughter, Barbara; a son, Pete; five grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; two nephews, one niece; and many cousins and extended relatives.
Services were held from the Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home. Interment was in the Columbia City Cemetery.
Magilda's older siblings listed in the 1920 U.S. Federal Census were as follows: Domingo, age 18; Frank, age 14; Louis, age 12; Vera; age 8; Meglio, age 4. Her younger brother, Antonio, had been born but his name was omitted in error.
Magilda's parents married in Italy about 1901. They and their son, Domingo, immigrated to the United States in 1904, and began farming.
When the boys in the family finished their schooling, they immediately started working. Domingo worked at the lime kiln in Sonora and in construction, Frank went into the building trade and Louis sold groceries.
The family home was at Stewart Street and Lyons Street in Sonora. It was valued at $5000 in 1930.
