Army Pfc. Pahnke was assigned to Company C, 1st Battalion, 37th Armored Regiment, 1st Armored Division, Friedberg, Germany. Pahnke was killed while on patrol in Baghdad when he was shot in the back by a single shot by a sniper as he rode in the back seat of a Humvee. He was in a two-vehicle convoy that was seeking a former Iraqi missile compound when the sniper's bullet punctured the canvas top of the Humvee. When Shawn joined the Army, he fulfilled his lifelong dream to serve in the military. He was killed after spending just a few weeks in Iraq. Serving in the military forced him to miss the birth of his son on March 20 but he was on a cell phone with his wife throughout the birth. Shawn was able to hear his baby's first cry and know it was a boy.
