Born and raised in Alexandria, VA. Sarah was a student at George Mason University majoring in accounting with a minor in economics. While attending college, she worked several jobs which enhanced her experience and provided her with a small income. Sarah was a very friendly and outgoing person. She was a very beautiful young woman who had a great joie de vivre and loved to meet new and interesting people. She enjoyed traveling, especially out of the United States, in the past she had visited England, France, Holland, and the Bahamas. One of her dreams was to visit many more countries in the future, and she planned to visit Greece, Spain, Mexico, and Italy. From an early age, Sarah was an active participant in sports, particularly soccer and basketball. As a youngster, she was involved in Daisies, Brownies, and Girl Scouts.
Unfortunately, Sarah died while a passenger in a dreadful automobile accident on June 14, 2007. Sarah is survived by her mother, Susan C. Carter; her father, Douglas H. Carter Jr.; her brother, Ryan Douglas Carter; her grandparents Evelyn and Col. Douglas H. Carter, Sr. (US Army Ret.), Ruth and Col. Leonard Petkoff (US Army Ret.); two uncles, five aunts, and numerous cousins.
The family will receive friends on Friday June 22 from 12 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the DEMAINE FUNERAL HOME, Alexandria, VA. A memorial service will be held at Aldersgate Methodist Church, 1307 Collingwood Rd., Alexandria, VA at 11 a.m. on Saturday June 23, 2007. Burial will be private.
Sarah, along with her cousin Lydia Petkoff, 18, Renee Shelkin, 18, and Elaine "Nettie" Thackston, 20, died in a car crash on the Capital Beltway, just hours after Renee and Lydia had graduated from West Potomac High School.
