Thomas Jefferson Burnes was born in Walton County, Georgia to Thomas and Betsy "Coker" Burnes. In 1850 the Burnes family was living in Talladega, Alabama, by 1860 they were in Titus County, Texas.

During the Civil War, Thomas and his older brother John William Burns enlisted in Company A, Unit 22 Texas Infantry. (Hubbard's Texas Inf).

After the war Thomas married Nancy Jane Mabry together they had 11 known children.
