SKAGGS Fred Isaac Skaggs, 60, died November 28, 2012 with Kim, his wife of 29 years, by his side in Annandale, NJ. He was born December 7, 1951 in Paintsville, KY to Ford Skaggs and Nancy Reedy. Fred is preceded in death by his father Ford Skaggs. He is survived by his mother, Nancy Reedy; and brothers, Duane (Patty) and Charles Porath. He spent his early years in Kentucky before moving to Columbus, Ohio. He attended North High School and the University of Southern Colorado at Pueblo. Fred served in Vietnam as a door gunner with the 129th Assault Helicopter Company. Of the various medals Fred earned, he was most proud of receiving the US Army Soldiers Medal which is awarded for heroism by voluntary risk of life not involving conflict with an enemy. During a typhoon, Fred was one of 16 volunteers to fly a rescue mission that resulted in saving the lives of 800 Vietnamese civilians from drowning. Since its inception in 1926, only 18,520 Soldiers Medals have been awarded. He worked many years for the City of Columbus division of Parks and Recreation before moving to Rotterdam, The Netherlands. He also lived in Raleigh, North Carolina and Summit, New Jersey before moving to Annandale, NJ. He worked at Fellowship Village in Bernardsville, NJ as a maintenance technician before his stroke in December 2011. His passion was music and he custom recorded thousands of CDs ranging from jazz, rhythm and blues, soul, to rock. He was known as a good dancer and appeared on the weekly Dance Party show during his youth. Family will receive friends on Friday, December 7, 2012 from 4-7 p.m. at SCHOEDINGER WORTHINGTON CHAPEL, 6699 North High Street, Worthington, OH 43085. Family will also receive friends at the funeral home from 2-3 p.m. on Saturday, December 9, 2012 followed by a funeral service at 3 p.m. Military honors and a reception will follow the service.
