DR. LEONARD CARPI
Dr. Leonard William Carpi peacefully departed on his final flight into the Wild Blue Yonder Nov. 29, 2012, at age 88.
Born May 29, 1924, in Alhambra, Calif., Leonard was raised on a dairy farm in southern California, the youngest child of August and Margaret Carpi. He attended Puente High School, where he was captain of the football team. In high school, he met his sweetheart and wife, Elizabeth ("Betty") Severns, to whom he was married for 67 years.
During World War II, Leonard enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1943, graduating at the top of his class, with the rank of first lieutenant. He was assigned to the 9th Bomb Group, 20th Air Force in Tinian (Mariana Islands) in the South Pacific, flying B-29 Superfortress Bombers. He served with distinction as first officer (co-pilot) of the lead plane, flying missions over Japan. In May 1945, he was promoted to airplane commander, piloting his own plane, "Tokyo KO," flying his last mission over Japan Aug. 10, 1945. For his bravery, he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, five awards of the Air Medal, and the Presidential Unit Citation with one oak leaf cluster. After the war, Leonard returned to civilian life and promptly married Betty in October 1945. In 1954, he graduated from the Los Angeles College of Optometry, moved with his family to Las Vegas, and opened his practice at 219 N. Third St., then re-located to 523 E. Oakey, where his son William Carpi now practices.
Leonard was active in the Lions Club, where he was King Lion, the American Optometric Association and Nevada Optometric Association, where he served as president. Leonard's skills in optometry was widely recognized and he was named to the Board of Examiners for the State Board of Optometry. Leonard was a founding member of the 20th Air Force Reunion Association, as well as a long-time 33rd degree Scottish Rite Mason.
Leonard loved travel, and traveled with his family all over the United States. He and Betty took many cruises, flew on the Concorde super-sonic airplane, and with Betty, traveled the world, documenting each trip with another string of yarn on a wall-sized map in their house. He and Betty had many long-time friends in Las Vegas, who will miss his laughter and wonderful stories of his life.
Leonard was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Betty; his parents; his brother, August "Gus" Herbert Carpi, Jr.; and his sister, Pauline "Polly" Carpi Godwin Gwin.
He is survived by his three children, Linda Carpi D'Elia (Francis), Dr. William Leonard Carpi (Dr. Mary) and Janice E. Carpi (Garland Harwood); eight grandchildren, Janice D'Elia Biegler (Karl), Frank D'Elia (Rayna), Melissa Carpi Ransom (Larry), Sarah Carpi Sleeman (Allen), Anne Harwood Lansing (Brian), Leonard "Lee" William Carpi II, Garland Harwood IV and Deborah Carpi; two great-grandchildren, Candace and John Biegler, and another great-grandchild expected in June 2012.
Services will be at noon Monday, Dec. 3, at Palm Mortuary, 7600 S. Eastern Ave. Burial following at Palm Valley View Memorial Park. While flowers are always appreciated, the family suggests that memorial donations may be made to the USO or the American Heart Association .
