During World War II, Leonard enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1943, graduating at the top of his class, with the rank of first lieutenant. He was assigned to the 9th Bomb Group, 20th Air Force in Tinian (Mariana Islands) in the South Pacific, flying B-29 Superfortress Bombers.
