William H.H. Neal, business man dies
Founder of Neal & Hyde, dry goods concern, succumbs to attack of acute indigestion

William Henry Harrison Neal, retired head of Neal & Hyde, Inc., dry goods merchants, and one of the most prominent business men in Syracuse, died suddenly at his home, 700 W. Onondaga st., Wednesday morning at 8 o'clock. Acute indigestion was given as the cause of death. He was 84 years old.
Seized with indigestion after he had reached his office Tuesday morning. Mr. Neal recovered to such a degree after being taken to his home that his son-in-law and daughter, Mrs. Thomas Mitchell Pierce, New York City, who were visiting Mrs. Pierce's parents over the holidays, left for their home.
Mr. Neal was born at Cannon's Ferry, now Woodland, Sussex County, Del., May 22, 1839, of Scotch and English parentage. His father, a merchant, the younger Neal inherited the business instincts of the older, and early displayed that ability which marked him as a leader.
After acquiring an early training in Philadelphia, Mr. Neal came to Syracuse in 1863, associating with the firm of Price & Wheeler, where the Edwards store is now located. On Jan. 1, 1866, he entered the employ of D. McCarthy & Sons, now the Hunter-Tuppen store, and in 1870 went in business for himself under the firm name of Neal, Baum & Co. On Nov. 20, 1866, he had been married to Miss Harriet Baum, daughter of the man with whom he went into business.
One notable fact in Mr. Neal's life was the longevity of his various associations after he got a start for himself. A resident of Syracuse four nearly 60 years, he had lived at the W. Onondaga st. address for the last 50 years. Associated with him in business were men whome he had known almost his entire life. Salem Hyde, honorary president of the present corporation; Thomas Hopkins Hyde, a nephew, and vice president of the corporation with whom he was associated for 40 years, and Joseph Isaac Henry Wright, another nephew of the deceased, member of the Board of Directors of the corporation and together with Mr. Hyde, associated with Mr. Neal since 1866.
On Jan. 1, 1879 Mr. Neal brought about a consolidation of his own and a competing firm, Charles Chadwick & Company, under the firm name of Sperry, Neal & Hyde. As Neal & Baum, the business was located on the site now occupied by the Elks' Temple. On May 1, 1883, it was removed to its present location at 318 S. Clinton st.
On the death of Mr. Sperry in 1890, the firm became known as Neal & Hyde and on the retirement of Mr. Neal, Jan 1, 1917, the business was incorporated with Mr. Hyde as president. The latter became honorary president last year, retiring in favor of his son, Charles Salem Hyde, now head of the corporation.
He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Harriet Baum Neal; one son, J. Ward Neal of this city; a daughter, Mrs. Harriet May Pierce, and several nephews and nieces. The funeral will be held from his last home, Friday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. The Rev. H.H. Hadley, of St. Paul's Church will officiate. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery.
