Surgeon of the 28th Iowa Infantry, Commission date - December 21st, 1864

In the death of Dr. W. A. Daniel, which occurred at h is home in Traer Monday last. Tama county loses a notable man, a man who was not only one of our first settlers, the first physician, the first surveyor, but one who in all north Tama stood perhaps first in the hearts of the people. We have never known a more lovable man, ono whoso every day life was a more constant benediction. Death came peacefully and painlessly. The doctor never recovered from the accident of a year or two ago, when thrown from a buggy, and the past two weeks failed rapidly from general debility.
He was one of the very first to cast his lot in Tama county, locating here in 1852. He was born in Ohio, October 9, 1825. He was graduated from Rush Medical college in 1852 and came direct to this locality. Few settlers were here and to busy himself he did surveying. He was elected county surveyor and drew the first warrant ever issued by the county. He purchased the Buckingham farm in 1853 which for half a century was his home. In a few years his medical practice grew so it required all his time, and he spent much of his life in this work, traveling long distances over the bleak prairies to aid the sick. In 1864 he was commissioned as surgeon in the Twenty-fourth Iowa and spent one year in the army. He was in several battles and was one of the few to see Sheridan come in from his famous ride.
After the war he resumed his practice here and continued until 1881, when he retired to his attractive home farm in Buckingham. November 10, 1858, he married Janet Gordon. She died July 8 , 1903, since which time the doctor found a welcome in the homes of his son Howard and daughter, Mrs. T. H. Best, in Traer. Beside these he was father of three children, Elizabeth, who died in infancy; Luella, who died in 1893; and Nellie, for many years a missionary, now at home.
Deceased was a Methodist from boyhood and was one of the organizers of the churches at Buckingham and Traer. He was a leader in all church work and other good causes. He was a man of wide intelligence, being a great reader. He lived one of the most beautiful Christian lives that has ever blessed Tama county. He was always the same quiet, affable, lovable Dr. Daniel. He had endured adversity bravely and he enjoyed prosperity quietly. No man can estimate the good ho did in this community in his long career of usefulness in many channels. There was a daily beauty about his life that won every heart. The stern reaper found him "as a shock of corn fully ripe for the harvest. " Not for him be our tears. Rather let his grave be crowned with garlands, his memory be revered; his model life emulated. Few of us will live as long or as well; fewer yet will the Angel of death greet with such a loving touch.
The funeral was on Wednesday afternoon. Services were in the Methodist Episcopal church in the presence of a large company of loving friends. Floral offerings were beautiful and profuse. Tender and beautiful tributes were delivered by the pastor, Rev. Hunt, and Revs. Jones, of Marion, and Smith, of Belle Plaine, former pastors. . Interment was in Buckingham beside the wife and daughters.
Husband of Janet Gordon.
