Mrs. R. J. (Della) Ladd, 87, widow of a Traer-businessman and a resident of Traer most of her life, died at 11:30 last Friday morning, January 19, in Downey, California. Services were held in Downey Mortuary in Downey last Sunday, conducted by the pastor of the Downey First Methodist church, after which the body was expressed to Traer, arriving at Tama at yesterday morning, and brought to the Erickson Funeral Home in Traer. Neither of the daughters was able to accompany the body. Services were held at Ericksons at 2.30 yesterday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. Forrest E. Flowers, Methodist pastor, and he also conducted the committal rites at the grave in Buckingham cemetery.
Mrs. Ladd was born Eudella Truesdell, on a farm near Toledo, on October 11, 1874, the daughter of Orson and Sara Truesdell. She was a young girl when the family moved to a farm northwest of Traer. Later they became residents of Traer. Mrs. Ladd attended school in Traer and was graduated from Traer high school in 1892. She also attended Iowa State Normal school at Cedar Falls, later known as State Teachers College and was a school teacher in Tama county schools until her marriage September 23, 1903, to Roma J. Ladd, of Traer. Her husband, who died May 16, 1942, was the owner and manager of the Ladd Produce company, in Traer many years, after having been associated as a partner, with his father, Levi Ladd, a pioneer Traer business man.
Mr. And Mrs. R. J. Ladd were the parents of two daughters, Mrs. J. F. (Alpha) Koerner, of Downey, California, and Mrs. Sidney (Roma Jean) Dean, of Orinda, California. Mrs. Dean's husband is a former Traer boy, a son ,of Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Dean.
Mrs. Ladd remained in Traer after the death of her husband until 1954. Since then, she had spent most of her time with the daughters in California. She was in good health until suffering a fall on November 9, 1961 when she broke a hip and an arm at the wrist, which she was hospitalized in Downey. Death was caused by pneumonia, which developed only two days before her death. Mrs. Ladd was a member of the Traer Methodist church and faithful worker in the church, and Sunday school until her last years. She was a charter member of the Traer Eastern Star chapter and until she left Traer for California to remain, she, was a 50-year member of Traer's Monday club. Besides the two daughters, she leaves a granddaughter, Mrs. Suzanne Dean Severns, and a grandson, Wendell Severns in California and two nieces, Grace T. Gates, Marshalltown; and Gertrude Sherwin of Lake Worth, Florida.
