William J. Gibson was a son of James Gibson (1800-1848) and his wife, Mary McCaslin Gibson (1800-1852) of what was Beaver (now Lawrence) County, Pennsylvania. His parents left him an orphan at a young age. He graduated from the Kingsville Academy, and taught school prior to the Civil War. He rose to the rank of Commissary Sergeant in the 105th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. After the Civil War he graduated from the University of Michigan. He worked as an associate editor for the Detroit Free Press and then for 22 years as associate editor of the Cincinnati Times Star. After his retirement he returned to Michigan. William J. Gibson married Grace Ellen McCartney. They had two daughters: Irene and Mrs. Ivy Gibson Hamilton. The siblings of Mr. Gibson include: Robert Gibson (1821-1899); Rachel (1823-1872) married Samuel Slater (1810-1881);i Nancy (1826-1898) married John Clinefelter; William (1828- 1833); John Gibson [(1830-1905) married Hannah McConnell (1835-1879); George Bailie Gibson (1835- ) married his cousin, Margaret Brady moved to Clinton County, Iowa then went west; Mary Elizabeth (1844-1926) married Nelson Julius Rogers of Detroit, Michigan.
