Pastor Paul A. Merki, age 82, of Teryl Drive, Mount Vernon, passed away on Sunday, December 2, 2012 at the Ohio Eastern Star Home in Mount Vernon.

The one life that Paul Merki was given burned brightly for His Lord. Born on September 8, 1930, he learned early the value of hard work when his father was taken suddenly in a tragic accident. In college, he completely surrendered his life to Christ and devoted himself to doing God's work. As he pastored churches in Pennsylvania, Alaska, Ohio, New Jersey and Maryland, his passion in life was to show people the love of Christ and to see their lives transformed by that love. He did it well and inspired many along the way to follow in his footsteps and commit their lives to ministry. No one can testify to the genuine faith of a person as well as their child. If you ask any of Paul Merki's four children if he truly lived his faith and walked his talk, you will get a resounding yes! A loving and faithful husband, a devoted and nurturing father, and proud and generous grandfather, a compassionate and caring friend to all who had the privilege to know him-he will be greatly missed. But one thing we know for certain, we will join him one day and worship along with him-in no small part because of the example of his life. He showed us the way!
He is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen (Williams) Merki, two sons, Stephen (Diane) Merki of La Plata, Maryland, David (Annette) Merki of Canton, Michigan, two daughters, JoAnne (Tim) Hancock of Gallatin, Tennessee, Deborah Merki of Newark, nine grandchildren, a great grandson, two brothers, Robert (Beth) Merki of Franklin, Tennessee and William (Sheril) Merki of Martinsburg, West Virginia.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Ruth Elizabeth Merki and a half-sister, Frances Merki.
Friends may call on Thursday from 1 to 3 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held on Friday at 1 p.m. at the First Church of the Nazarene where friends may call one hour prior. Pastor Stephen Merki will be officiating. Burial will follow in Mound View Cemetery in Mount Vernon.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Paul Merki Ministerial Scholarship Fund at Mount Vernon Nazarene University, 800 Martinsburg Road, Mount Vernon, Ohio 43050.
