Husband of Joan de Mortimer, daughter of Roger de Mortimer by Joan Joinville. They were married before June 1330 and had the following children; two sons and two daughters:

* Joan, wife of John Tuchet
* Margaret, wife of Sir Roger Hillary
Secondly, he was the husband of an Isabel, married before 1347, and had four more sons and a daughter;

* Roland de Audley
* Sir James de Audley
* Margaret, wife of Fulk FitzWarin (Blanche?)
James was co-heir to his mother's brother, William Martin, by which he inherited the barony of Barnstaple, Devonshire, and the castle and lordship of Newport, Pembroke, Wales. He was also co-heir to his great uncle, John Giffard, 2nd Lord Giffard, by which he inherited a moiety share of the manor of Ashton, Wiltshire. He was summoned to Parliament from 1330 to 1386, and was one of the founders of the knights of the Garter in 1348.
Cokayne's records state he died at Heleigh.
