Barbara Jean Johnson of Blackbird died Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2005, at her home surrounded by her loving family after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She was 56.

Barbara Jean was born May 4, 1949, in Wilmington, daughter of Evelyn Holland and the late Elton P. "Ike" Holland. Mrs. Johnson taught first grade at Townsend Elementary School for 30 years, retiring in 2001.

Throughout her career, she touched the hearts of many children and was awarded District Teacher of the Year in 1977.

She was a loving wife, mother, daughter, and grandmother. She enjoyed reading, gardening, and spending time with friends and family. She was a member of Esther Chapter 17 OES of Middletown, ADK, a society of women educators, member and vice president of Townsend Women's Club, and the 3M's of Immanuel United Methodist Church in Townsend, where she attended regularly.

She is survived by her devoted husband of 32 years, Stanley W. Johnson of Blackbird; a daughter and her husband, Andrea and Tom Shoemaker of Townsend; a daughter at home, Laurie B. Johnson and her boyfriend Stephen Poore of Smyrna; a granddaughter, Kourtney Allisyn Shoemaker; and a host of family and close friends.

Her family would like to thank Brooke Matthes, CNA, for her compassionate and loving care during Barbara's final days at home.

A funeral service was held Sept. 24 at the Daniels & Hutchison Funeral Home, Middletown. Interment was in Mt. Olivet Methodist Cemetery Warwick, Md.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the ACS Middletown Relay For Life team "Barb's Bunch" at 92 Reads Way, New Castle, DE 19720 or Townsend Women's Club Scholarship Fund at P.O. Box 237, Townsend, DE 19734.
