Alice I. Kersten, 88, passed away at Sacred Heart Hospital on Thursday, July 15, 2004.

Alice was born in the township of Springbrook in Dunn County on February 1, 1916, to John and Gertrude (Berg) Solem.

Alice attended Springbrook School. She came to Eau Claire when she was 14 years old. She did house cleaning and worked at Presto from 1938 to 1945.

Alice married Fred Kersten on April 16, 1944, at Our Redeemer Church in Eau Claire.

She was a homemaker and worked at UW-Eau Claire food service for two years. Alice also played the organ for 12 years at Springbrook Church.

She loved to grow flowers, cook, bake and she made wonderful donuts.

She is survived by her husband, Fred Kersten of Eau Claire; her sons, Gary (Julie) Kersten of Eau Claire, Dan Kersten of Eau Claire; her daughter, Bonnie (Ed) Jeffers of Eau Claire; her sister, Gladys Schaaf of Eagan, Minn.; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Alice was preceded in death by her parents; her brother Julius Solem; and her sister Helen Brenden.

Services will be at St. Johns Church on Monday, July 19, 2004, at 1:30 p.m. with Pastor Thomas Bryan officiating.

Friends and family may call on Sunday, July 18, 2004, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Smith Funeral Chapel and at the church one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at Forest Hill Cemetery.

Smith Funeral Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
