Florence was the daughter of Richard and Maud Effie Harbin Jay. She was the eldest daughter of 5 children born to her parent. Having grown up in the small minning towns of Shoshone County, Idaho, Florence always had a lot of interesting stories to tell her family about her young years.
As a young woman she moved to Spokane and found employment as housekeeper in some of the finer residents there, and later did the same in Portland, Oregon. In 1929 she met and married Oliver Iverson, at the home of her sister Hazel, Marshfield, Coos County, Oregon. After the birth of their son, Richard they moved to Portland.
Florence had a "green thumb", when it came to raising plants, especially African Violets. She was a great cook, and could cook a meal for a large group without much effort.
