American Bandleader and songwriter. He was raised and educated in Boston, and began appearing on radio in 1920. Rines led his own orchestra, and appeared on New England's Yankee Network, WMCA Radio in New York City, and the NBC Radio Network. Rines was well-known as one of the few bandleaders to have an integrated orchestra for live shows and radio appearances in the 1930s and 1940s. In addition to being the music director at WMCA, he wrote songs and commercial jingles, including memorable tunes and lyrics for radio and TV ads promoting Ajax Cleanser, Halo Shampoo and Quaker Oats. Rines also produced several radio shows, including "The Andrews Sisters" and "Colgate Comedy Hour." In 1948 he became an executive with the Sherman & Marquette advertising agency, where he worked until his retirement in the late 1960s. In 1959 Rines married comedienne and actress Portland Hoffa, the widow of radio entertainer Fred Allen, and they remained married until Rines' death.
