Civil War Union Army Officer. He was mustered in as a Sergeant in Company C, 1st New Jersey Militia on April 30, 1861, serving through the July 1861 First Bull Run Campaign until he was honorably mustered out on July 31, 1861.

He was then commissioned as 1st Lieutenant of Company B, 8th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on September 27, 1861. Promoted to Captain and commander of Company H on October 4, 1862, he led his men through to the July 1861 Battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. There, while his men were fighting in the Rose Woods area on the Second Day of the Battle (July 2), he was wounded in the thigh. He lingered with his wound in Gettysburg until he died on July 29, 1863.

On September 12, 1863 his wife, Ellen A. Davis, filed for a US Army Widow's Pension (Application #32897, Certificate #14450).
