WESTBY/LA CROSSE — Susan V. Limpert, nee Kidd, formerly of La Crosse passed away peacefully at the age of 85, on Saturday, June 12, 2010, at Norseland Nursing Home in Westby, Wis. Susan was born on Dec. 7, 1924, to Leroy and Susan (Huron) Kidd, in Pepin, Wis., and was the youngest of 12 children.

She moved to La Crosse in 1942 and took her first job at the Autolite, after which she worked at Allis Chalmers, Machine Products, and Gateway Glass. She retired from Gateway Glass in 1985.

Susan married Walter Limpert in 1951 and had three children, Sandra, Steven and Scott. Susan and Walter divorced in 1963.

In her younger years, Susan was an avid shuffleboard player and played on some of the city's tavern leagues. She also enjoyed dancing, bowling and walking – she never got a driver's license, so she was known for walking all over the city of La Crosse. Susan loved being out in the sun, and even as she grew older, she would often walk across the Cass Street Bridge to Pettibone Beach to sunbathe.

Susan, or "Susie" as many people called her, had a heart of gold. While she spoke her mind freely and did not mince words, she would give you the shirt off her back as well as her last dollar if that is what it took to help. Speaking with those who knew her over the years, she was described as "one-of-a-kind," "colorful," "a character," "interesting," "special," and "unforgettable." Whatever their description, everyone agreed that she was a good person with a big heart, they loved her spirit, felt fortunate to have known her and will miss her dearly.

She was also known for her signature hairdo – puffed-up red hair that no hairdresser could ever get just right. She loved animals (especially dogs), Elvis, the Chippendales, red lipstick, chewing gum, M&Ms and Peanut Butter Cups. Right up until she quit smoking at age 83, she claimed not to inhale – rather she "French inhaled" through her nose. If she liked you, she might call you "fartso beano" or hit you with her "dammit doll."

Susan was a devoted mother and grandmother, and is survived by her daughter, Sandra Limpert, of Louisville, Ky.; her son and daughter-in-law, Steven and Patty Limpert, of Westby; her son, Scott (Beth) Limpert, of Edina, Minn.; three grandsons, Shaun Steiner of Louisville, Chase Limpert of Westby, and Peter Limpert of Edina; and one granddaughter, Grace Limpert of Edina; her sister, Catherine (Herbert) Pataska of Kenosha, Wis.; sister-in-law, Margaret (Leroy) Kidd of Lake City, Minn.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Yiantha Taylor, Clara (Herman) Magin and Lily (George) Papacek; her brothers, John Blair, Rolland (Clarice) Blair, Everett Kidd, Raymond Kidd, Lyle (Louella) Kidd, Glen (Ardys) Kidd, and Leroy "Junior" (Margaret) Kidd; her brothers-in-law; and sisters-in-law; and her nephews, Gregg Pataska, Tom Papacek, Duane Kidd, and Leonard Taylor.

According to her wishes, Susan will be cremated. There will be a celebration of Susan's life at Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home, 200 West Ave. S., La Crosse, on June 26 at 11 a.m. Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of services. On Saturday, July 10, there will be a memorial service at the United Methodist Church in Pepin, followed by the final interment in Oakwood Cemetery.

We wish the Lord the best of luck with Susie – He will have his hands full!
