Glenn A. Stephens, 92, of East Palatka, died Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2005, at Putnam Community Medical Center in Palatka following a brief illness.
Born July 29, 1913 at 626 Kirby Street in Palatka, he was a native and lifelong resident of Palatka and East Palatka. He was a 1932 graduate of the Putnam High School in Palatka, where he organized and directed the first band at the school. He was a WW II veteran having served in the U.S. Army as a first sergeant in the Headquarters Company of the 1st Battalion, 422nd Infantry. He was captured by the German forces in the Battle of the Bulge and was a prisoner of war for five months. Following his liberation, he was treated for tuberculosis in military hospitals for two years. He took home study courses from the LaSalle University in Chicago and became an accountant. He owned and operated Glenn Stephens Accounting in Palatka before WW II. He reopened his practice in 1947 with one account and did not completely retire until 2001, when he had a stroke. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Palatka and the Palatka Rotary Club, where he was honored as a Paul Harris Fellow. He had an unique way of leading the singing which the Rotarians will always remember. He was a member and past president of two statewide accounting associations, the Florida Accountants Association and the Enrolled Agents, and was instrumental in establishing different accounting associations throughout the state. He was also a member of the Palatka Lodge No. 34, F&AM, the Putnam County Shrine Club in East Palatka; the Morocco Temple AAONMS, where he played the trumpet in the band and the Bert Hodge Post No. 45 of the American Legion, where he was a past commander. He was a past treasurer of the Putnam County Historical Society in Palatka. He had a great outlook on life and was liked by all who knew him. He had a good sense of humor and was quite a joker, always full of merriment and laughter.
He was preceded in death by his wives, Edna Brunner Stephens and Dorothy Fullerton Stephens; his parents, Lewis and Margaret Stephens; one son, Rick Stephens and one brother, Winston Stephens.
He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Peggy and Johnny Brooks of East Palatka; one son and daughter-in-law, John and Flory Stephens of Melrose; one sister, Helen S. Martin of Palatka; four grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
