Friedrich "Ferdinand" was the son of Friedrich "Christian" Immelt and Maria "Elisabeth" Scharlotta Roos-Immelt. Ferdinand was born in Freienseen, Hesse Darmstadt, Germany. His family immigrated to America about 1832. Probably arriving in New York City, they were in Albany, New York when his mother Elisabeth and his two siblings died in August, 1832. Siblings, Christina and Wilhelm and his mother were first buried in the churchyard cemetery of Ebenezer Lutheran Church [First Lutheran Church of Albany]. In 1866 a resolution was passed authorizing disinterment, transfer, and re-interment of remains in church graveyards to Albany Rural Cemetery and so Elisabeth, Christina and Wilhelm are buried in a section called "Church Ground." Ferdinand and his father Christian. moved on quickly to Pike County, Ohio where other Immelt famiy members lived. The father married the following year; Nancy McClure on 31 Jul 1833 in Pike County, Ohio. They had six children; Elizabeth, Catherine, John, Philip A., William, and Sarah Frances Immelt.

Ferdinand married a neighbor girl Rhoda Evelina Clark on 15 Dec 1851 in Pike County, Ohio. Their children were: Mary L. [Claytor], Sarah Jane [Thomas], Margaret [Tope], Keziah E. Immelt, Frederick Christian Immelt, and John C. F. Immelt.

Ferdinand died during the period of the Civil War, but no evidence of enlistment has been found. No filing of pension records recorded by Rhoda Clark-Immelt, his widow, and she lived until after 1900 when records were more dependable.
