Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. In 1849, he moved to Iowa where he worked as a teacher, farmer and a merchant. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he was commissioned a 1st Lieutenant of Company D, 15th Iowa Infantry on September 20 1861 and Captain of Company K in January 1862. At the battle of Shiloh he was wounded, taken prisoner, paroled October 18, 1862 and returned to Washington D.C. as Lieutenant Colonel on April 22, 1863. He was appointed a Republican Delegate and nominated Abraham Lincoln for President re-elect in 1864. He rejoined his regiment in the spring of 1864 and was severely wounded in the Atlanta Georgia campaign on July 22, 1864. Unable to return to field duty due to wounds, he was detailed to the War Department in Washington, promoted Colonel August 18, 1864 and brevetted Brigadier General on March 13, 1865. After the war he was Editor of the Ottumwa Courier and appointed Postmaster of Wapello County, Iowa from 1866 to 1876. He served as Supervisor of Internal Revenue for Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota, Colorado, and the Dakotas from 1870 to 1876. After 1881 he was manager of the street car system in Ottumwa, Iowa serving until his death from compilations of his war wounds.
