Steamboat owner and operator. Price began his career as a riverman before steamboats had been invented, and as a keel-boatman first brought boats down the Ohio River from Pittsburg or Maysville, and then up the Mississippi to St. Louis. First coming to St. Louis in 1819, he settled there permanently and thereafter commanded some of the first steamboats that plied on the Mississippi River. He had many interesting and historical experiences, among which was the carrying of Colonel Leavenworth from St. Louis to what afterward became Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Colonel Leavenworth was the first settler there and the founder of the town which bears his name. Most of the boats which he owned or commanded were built in Cincinnati, Ohio, under his direction. It was to his credit that when he was at the wheel he never lost a boat. After following the river successfully some years he retired, and for two or three years afterward, was identified with the grocery and commission trade in St. Louis. A staunch churchman of the Episcopalian faith, he was one of the founders of Christ Church in St. Louis.
