William H Johnston enlisted on 22 June 1861 in the Beattie's Ford Riflemen, a group that would become Company K, 13th North Carolina, and later the 23rd North Carolina Infantry Regiment. Initially elected as First Lieutenant, he was elected Captain of Company K on 11 May 1862 to succeed his elder brother (Robert Daniel Johnston). Johnston was wounded at Seven Pines on 31 May 1862, and captured at Gettysburg on 1 July 1863. He was confined at Fort Delaware and transferred to Johnson's Island OH, where he was confined until paroled on 14 Mar 1865 and transferred to Point Lookout MD. He was exchanged on 22 Mar 1865, and later paroled again at Charlotte on 12 May 1865.
