Melodia was the daughter of Ransom L. Blackmarr and Eliza Bowe. Ransom was a minister and was married in Trumbull County Ohio. Melodia, the fourth of five children was 12 years old when her mother Eliza died in 1862. her father remarried in 1867 to Jane Bundy.
Melodia attended Mount Union College in Alliance Ohio, graduating in 1871. She married Joseph Thomas Jones October 15, 1876 in Venango County, Pennsylvania.
The couple had two children, Grace E. and Joseph Albert "Bert" Jones.
