"ETTA MAE DAVIDSON VAN WINKLE"
April 21, 1919 – December 6, 2012
With deep sorrow and love, the family announces the loss of our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and aunt at the age of 93. Except for the past few months she lived independently in her own home.
She leaves her children Sue (Doug Obee) of Winnipeg, Canada, Tim (Kristin) of Bladensburg, Jane (Tom Smith) of Fairfield, Washington and Jim (Kat) of Heath. Also, her grandchildren: Anne Obee of Costa Mesa, California; Patrick Van Winkle of Newark, Jessica (Jim Witt) of Mt. Vernon and their children Ryder and Camilla, Thomas Van Winkle of Newark, Zachary Van Winkle of Cleveland Heights, SPC Andrew Van Winkle of Fort Campbell, Kentucky and Ryan Nolan of Heath. She leaves many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband Dwight, her eldest child Ann, her parents and her four brothers and her sister.
This is how Etta Mae Davidson Van Winkle started writing her memories of her early childhood. She was born to Mel and Jennie Davidson in Bladensburg, Ohio.
"I was the 5th child born to my dad and mother on the 21st day of April 1919, my weight being only 5 pounds as the effects of and results of my mother having had the flu in February of that year. The flu that killed many mothers at that time was called the influenza of 1918 – 1919. My dad was a Spanish American War veteran and rural mail carrier in the days of the horse and buggy. My mother was a nurse having graduated from the Newark Sanatorium in 1905."
She had fond memories of growing up: "We played many days together, riding horses, swimming in the creek near our 50 acre farm and having the horses to ride. I learned very young to milk cows, feed pet lambs that were orphaned, and wash dishes as we had many of them. We would swim in the muddy creek overflowing from recent rains. It would take us down the creek with great fun and we had to watch the whirlpools as they might be very dangerous."
On December 24, 1935, Etta Mae Davidson married Dwight Van Winkle also of Bladensburg. Together they had 5 children. Mom and Dad encouraged us to continue our education and supported us in our life choices. Dwight died on Jan. 9, 1990. They had just celebrated 54 years of marriage.
Besides raising us Mom had a variety of jobs and together she worked with Dad as a school bus driver, drove dump truck for Dad's gravel business and worked in their grocery story.
Mom did lots of baking, especially angel food cakes from scratch. And when she baked pies it wasn't any pie – it had to be your favorite kind. There were cookies for the travelers, the visitors, and just for any occasion. Homemade noodles were even mailed to family members in their "care packages."
Gardening was always a part of Mom's life until recently. The vegetables were frozen and canned and dill and sweet pickles were always a favorite. Etta was honored to be the Parade Marshall at the 37th Annual Bladensburg Christmas Parade in December 2007.
As people of faith, our parents helped establish the Bladensburg Church of God. Mom is a member of the Church of God, where she faithfully attended and for many years served as a Trustee. We have lost count of the number of Bibles she wore out. Her prayer lists were long ones and we always felt nearer to God when Mom/Grandma was praying for us.
To honor her memory bake a cake, a pie and/or cookies and take to a shut-in, friend or just for the joy of doing it. In lieu of flowers monetary gifts in her memory can be given to Foundation Ministries for Africa Missions, 8925 Hazel Dell Road, P.O. Box 56, Bladensburg, Ohio, 43005. The family will receive friends from 4-7 p.m. on Saturday, December 15, 2012 at the church and from 1 p.m. until the celebration of life service at 2 p.m. on Sunday. Burial will follow in Mount Zion Cemetery near Bladensburg.
