Joseph Kiger Rites Monday
Nonogenarian -- Oldest Member of IOOF in State, Dies Friday
Obsequies will be held Monday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock in the South Side Kepner funeral home for Joseph F Kiger, 91, oldest member of the Odd Fellows lodge in the state of West Virginia and well-known retired Sherrard district farmer, whose death occurred suddenly Friday morning at his home in Mosart.
The Rev French Boone, pastor of the Sherrard Methodist charge, will be the officiating clergyman and interment will be made in Mount Olivet cemetery.
Despite his advanced age, Mr Kiger had been in good health and during the week had worked in his garden as usual. Stricken suddenly, death followed shortly afterward.
He was born February 17, 1851, near Ravencraft hill, Marshall county, a son of Louis and Jane Bailey Kiger. Orphaned early in life he was given a home with Richard Ravencraft, prominent woodsman and farmer, and later inherited the Ravencraft farm which he operated until his retirement in 1931. Mr Kiger had made his home at Mosart since that time.
Mr Kiger joined Lincoln lodge No 49, IOOF, in April, 1871, at Benwood, and when the lodge moved to McMechen he continued his membership. He was the Senior Odd Fellow at West Virginia in point of years and membership. Mr Kiger was a former member of the Jr OUW at Sherrard, and of the Elm Grove Knights of Pythias. He was a member of Pleasant Hill Methodist church, Sherrard.
His wife, Sarah Ashton Kiger, to whom he was married March 25, 1874, died in 1933.
Surviving are three daughters, Mrs Burt Mozena, of Martins Ferry, Mrs Walter Miller, of Mosart, Miss Rufina Kiger, at home, six sons, R C Kiger, of Washington DC, J H Kiger, of Maryville, Tennn, P R Kiger of Canal Zone, Panama, Ross Kiger, at home, Burch Kiger, of Sherrard, and Reid Kiger, of Mozart, 12 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
