Mr. Allen was born on a farm near Ossian August 26, 1885, the son of Edward W. and Melissa Cooley Allen. He spent his boyhood days on the home farm and attended the rural schools of that community. As a young man he attended Breckenridge school in Decorah.
He was united in marriage to May Clark on Oct. 26, 1910, at Waterloo, and it was here where they spent the first 3 and one half years of their married life. In March, 1914, they moved to a home near Castalia and during the remainder of Mr. Allen's life he lived in or near Castalia until his last illness, when he came to make his home with his daughter in Postville. Mrs. Allen preceded him in death in June, 1934.
His wife, parents, one brother, William, and one grandson preceded him in death.
Mr. Allen was a carpenter by trade and a natural-born artist. He leaves many beautiful oil paintings as a tribute to his memory. He will be especially remembered by the people of the Castalia Evangelical U. B. church for the picture, "Christ in Gethsemane," which he painted for the church in memory of his wife, May Clark Allen.
