Herman Julius came to America in 1885 with his parents, Herman Julius Sr. and Marie Wellnitz. We were always told that they came from Germany, but the village Beuche is now in Poland. He was a farmer and husband to Susan Thompson. They were parents to five children: Marian, Ellen, Margaret, Walter, and Lawrence.
At one time he owned the largest farm in Hudson Township, 400 acres, doing general farming and raising huge flocks of sheep. For a picture of the farm as it was in the 1950's and 1960's, see Find a Grave memorial 35113534 (belonging to original farm owner Moses Bennett). In 1920 Herman and Susie were living in a large old house at the SE corner of Springbrook and W. Maple Ave., but the family relocated to the Leroy area of Palmyra Township east of Adrian. In the 1930's Herman purchased the Bennett farm in Sec. 36 Hudson Twp., and later acquired smaller adjacent farms once belonging to the Grahams and Burnetts on the Old Town Road near Medina. In 2017 most of the land is owned by the State of Michigan as part of the Lake Hudson State Recreation Area, though some of the fields are still farmed.
